Hotham's Banked Slalom gets big turnout

This weekend saw the annual Mt Hotham Banked Slalom returning to the much loved Gun Barrel run on Heavenly Valley. The Banked Slalom is Hotham’s only Snowboard only event, it is also one of three events in the Hotham Junior Freeride Series open to adults. This event drew in a huge and eclectic mix of competitors from twice world champion Alex Pullin to Hotham’s crew of Mini Groms entering their first competition.

The course made the most of the fantastic terrain of Heavenly Valley with banked turns and jumps to challenge the competitors. Carrying on the tradition of a fun and friendly event the competitors created a great environment making the most of the sun, dropping in to lots of board shorts and shirtless runs. The vibe was excellent and could be felt all over the mountain.

Series regular, Samuel Walker took out the Mini Grom Boys category, with Pantxo Wall coming in a close second. In the Grom division Flynn Doolan took out first place with Kye Chaplin 1.49 seconds behind. The Junior Boys category was dominated by Callum Masjuk with Luke Chaplin taking second place – both an impressive effort by these boys after completing all week with the SSA Futures and ANC SBX event. The Open Male category saw a massive turn out with John Shelly taking first place with a time of 45.22 seconds with Adam Dickson coming in second place with a time of 45.50 seconds – 0.28 seconds behind John.

Courtney Bartlett took out the Girls Grom division, with Charlotte Cornelius taking second place. Cora McCloskey took out the Junior Girls with Ellie Buxton coming in a close second. Georgia Baff dominated the open women’s division this year with a time of 51.01 seconds followed by Tia Tan coming in second with a time of 51.72 seconds.

Thanks once again to all the competitors, especially those who stood by encouraging our Mini Groms!

Our next event in the Hotham Junior Freeride series is the legendary Mt Hotham Hammer Moguls competition. This is a ski only event, open to competitors of all ages.
